Job Title: Teaching Assistant - behaviour
We are delighted to be working with a Pupil Referral Unit in Blackburn, who are searching for an experienced Teaching Assistant to support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and challenging behaviours. This would be a full time position, working Monday to Friday, 8.30-3.30 on an ongoing basis, initially until Easter 2026. There is potential for a permanent position for the right application
The successful applicant would be providing a mix of 1-1 and small group support. The school caters for primary and secondary aged children with a range of additional needs. There are instances of challenging behaviour, so previous experience with de-escalation techniques and behaviour management would be desirable for this role. There are also cases of autism, ADHD and learning difficulties across the school.
Many students are working below their age related expectations and require additional support with their learning. The school places a large focus on extra curricular activities as a means for the students to engage with their schooling. Applicants from a sports, coaching or artistic background would be welcomed.
This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with backgrounds in:
• Youth work or mentoring
• The police or armed forces
• Social care or community work
• Or those with experience in special education or behaviour support
As a Teaching Assistant, you will be required to act as a role model, conducting calm and respectful interactions. This can be a very rewarding role and no two days will be the same.
We are looking for somebody who has:
• A minimum of 6 months professional or personal experience in a relevant field OR - a certified qualification in a relevant area- education, psychology, drama etc
• A can-do attitude and desire to make a difference with the children they are supporting
• Good communication and teamwork skills
• An enhanced DBS check (we can guide you through this process if you do not already have one)
Experience working with young people who have SEMH needs is desirable, but not essential. The important thing is that you are a consistent, reliable and proactive individual who is adept at building positive relationships.
