Job Title: SEND Teaching Assistant
Are you passionate about supporting young people who have struggled to engage with mainstream education?
We are currently looking for an experienced Learning Mentor to join an Alternative Provision in Plymouth. This is a full-time role supporting young people with a range of needs, including SEMH, trauma, autism and anxiety, as well as those who have found traditional education challenging.
About the role
The provision takes a child-led and personalised approach, working with each young person to understand their individual needs, interests and barriers to learning.
As a Learning Mentor, you will:
Build positive, trusting relationships with young people
Support students who may have struggled within mainstream education
Provide mentoring and support around learning, engagement and emotional regulation
Help young people develop confidence, resilience and independence
Support students with SEMH, trauma, autism and other additional needs
Adapt activities and learning to suit individual needs and interests
Support outreach work where required
Work closely with the wider team to provide consistent support
About you
The successful candidate will ideally have experience working with children or young people, particularly those with:
SEMH
Autism
Trauma or adverse childhood experiences
Anxiety or emotional difficulties
Challenging or complex behaviour
Previous difficulties engaging with education
You will need to be patient, empathetic, resilient and confident building relationships with young people who may have had negative experiences of education.
Experience within Alternative Provision, SEND, youth work, mentoring, care or education would be highly desirable.
A full driving licence and access to a car is essential, as the role will involve outreach work.
