Job Title: Outdoor Education Support Assistant
Are you someone who connects well with young people and believes learning doesn’t always happen best in a classroom? We’re looking for a Learning Support Assistant to work with pupils who have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, supporting them through outdoor learning, alternative provision and enterprise-style activities. This is a term-time, full-time role, offering purposeful work where relationships, creativity and consistency really matter. About the role: You’ll support small groups of students who benefit from a more hands-on, practical approach to education. Much of your time will be spent outdoors or in alternative learning spaces, delivering activities such as gardening, horticulture, Forest School-style sessions and small enterprise projects. You’ll also support students working towards accredited outcomes, helping them build confidence, skills and resilience. Alongside this, you’ll provide calm, relational SEMH support — helping young people regulate emotions, engage with learning and feel safe, understood and supported. Key details: • Hours: Around 33.5 hours per week, during the school day • Term time only • Pay: £19,000–£19,700 (actual salary, depending on experience) • Opportunities to attend trips, outdoor activities and residentials • Ongoing training and professional development What you’ll be doing: • Supporting pupils with SEMH needs in small groups and alternative provision • Delivering outdoor learning, gardening and practical activities • Helping students develop teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills • Supporting simple enterprise projects that build real-world skills • Using trauma-informed, relationship-led approaches to behaviour • Working closely with teachers, pastoral staff and families Some days will be challenging — but they are also hugely rewarding. This role is ideal for someone who is: • Calm, patient and emotionally resilient • Comfortable working outdoors and thinking creatively • Motivated by helping young people who struggle in mainstream settings • A strong team player with good communication skills Experience working with young people or SEMH needs is valued, but the right personality, values and mindset are more important than qualifications. This role would suit youth workers, outdoor educators, support workers, graduates or anyone considering a future in education, mental health or alternative provision. If you’re looking for a role where you can build genuine relationships, work creatively, and help young people re-engage with learning in a different way, this could be the opportunity for you.
