Description:
Axcis are working with a large, inclusive secondary school in Newham with a well-established specialist provision for deaf and hearing-impaired students. The school is seeking a BSL teaching assistant to support students with hearing impairment within a mainstream secondary setting.
This role involves providing in-class, small group and occasional 1:1 support to students who communicate using British sign language (BSL). You will work closely with class teachers, the send department and specialist staff to ensure students can fully access learning and remain engaged throughout the school day.
Due to the specialist nature of the role, applicants must have a formal BSL qualification or extensive, proven experience using BSL in an educational or support setting.
Key responsibilities:
• Supporting deaf and hearing-impaired students using BSL
• Interpreting classroom communication where required
• Supporting access to the curriculum and social interaction
• Working closely with teachers and send professionals
• Promoting independence and inclusion within the school
Ideal candidate:
• BSL level 2 or above, or extensive practical BSL experience
• Experience supporting young people in schools or colleges
• Confident working in a secondary setting
• Patient, professional and reliable
• Available full-time
