Job Title: Teaching Assistant for Year 5 Pupil with High-Functioning Autism (HFA)
Are you passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of children with special educational needs? A South Bristol primary school (BS13) is seeking a full-time Teaching Assistant to support a Year 5 pupil with High-Functioning Autism (HFA). This is a fantastic opportunity to work closely with a pupil who needs structured support while being part of a nurturing and inclusive environment. The role begins in Term 2 and is a long-term position, with hours from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday. About the Role: • Work with a Year 5 pupil with High-Functioning Autism (HFA): Your role will focus on supporting a pupil with HFA in their academic and social development, helping them navigate challenges with communication, social interactions, and sensory sensitivities. • Specialized Environment: The school provides a small, dedicated base where pupils with SEND can be taken when they feel dysregulated, ensuring they have a calm, supportive space when needed. • South Bristol Location: Convenient for those commuting within BS13 and surrounding areas. Key Responsibilities: • Offer one-on-one support to help the pupil manage their social interactions, emotional regulation, and academic tasks. • Use structured routines and visual aids to create a stable, predictable environment that helps the pupil feel secure. • Monitor sensory sensitivities and implement strategies to reduce overstimulation, including time in the school's designated SEND base when required. • Work with the class teacher and SENCO to adapt the curriculum, ensuring the pupil’s needs are met. • Encourage the pupil’s social skills and independence, using positive behaviour management strategies. What We’re Looking For: • Patience and Empathy: The ability to support a pupil who may experience difficulties with emotional regulation and communication, while understanding their unique needs. • Consistency and Structure: The pupil thrives in a predictable environment, so being able to maintain clear routines and offer stability is essential. • Adaptability: While routine is important, the ability to be flexible and respond to the pupil’s needs on any given day is equally crucial. • Behaviour Management Skills: Experience in de-escalating situations when the pupil becomes dysregulated, using techniques that promote calm and positive behaviour. • Excellent Communication Skills: You will need to communicate effectively with both the pupil and the wider school team, as well as support the pupil’s understanding of social cues and appropriate communication. • Experience with Autism: Prior experience working with children on the autism spectrum, particularly high-functioning autism, is highly desirable, though not essential if you have the right attitude and willingness to learn. Why Join This School? • Be part of a supportive and inclusive team, committed to providing the best environment for pupils with SEND. • Benefit from working in a school that prioritizes the well-being of its students and staff, offering a calm space for pupils with SEND when needed. • A great opportunity to make a lasting impact on a child’s development while working in a rewarding, long-term position. If you have a passion for supporting children with high-functioning autism and want to be part of a dedicated team in a supportive South Bristol primary school, apply today!
