Job Title: Primary SEND Teacher (Maternity Cover)
We are seeking a passionate, experienced Primary SEND Teacher to cover maternity leave at a highly regarded Special Educational Needs (SEND) school in Trafford. This role will begin in January 2026 and run through until July 2026. The successful candidate will work with a class of 10 children with a range of SEND needs, including ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition), SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs, and children who are pre-verbal with sensory needs.
This is a unique opportunity for a proactive, hands-on teacher who has SEND experience and is ready to make a real difference in the lives of children with complex needs.
About the Role:
Class of 10 children: The class will consist of 10 students ranging in age from Year 1 to Year 6 (KS1 – KS2), all with a range of complex needs, including pre-verbal communication, sensory sensitivities, and challenging behaviours linked to ASC and SEMH.
SEND Experience Required: You must have extensive experience working with children with Autism, SEMH, and Speech and Language needs in either a specialist SEND school or in a mainstream setting with a focus on SEND.
Individualised Learning Plans: You'll be responsible for creating and delivering individualised teaching plans tailored to each child's specific needs, ensuring that they have access to a broad and balanced curriculum.
Behaviour Management: A key part of the role will be managing challenging behaviours, using de-escalation strategies, positive behaviour reinforcement, and creating a supportive learning environment that promotes emotional regulation.
Hands-On Approach: This is a proactive, hands-on role where you will need to engage with students on a 1:1 basis, support them during structured activities, and adapt lessons for different sensory and communication needs.
Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration: You will work closely with the SENCO, teaching assistants, and other specialists to provide a cohesive and consistent approach to each child’s learning and development.
Holistic Development: Beyond academic progress, you will support the children's social and emotional development, communication skills (including non-verbal communication), and sensory integration.
About You:
SEND Experience Essential: You must have previous experience teaching children with a variety of special educational needs including ASC, SEMH, Speech and Language difficulties, and sensory processing issues.
Proactive and Flexible: We’re looking for a teacher who is not afraid to get stuck in, adapt to the ever-changing needs of the students, and maintain a positive, calm, and nurturing approach at all times.
Experience in a SEND School (ideal): While experience in a SEND school is ideal, we are also open to applications from those who have strong SEND experience in mainstream schools with a focus on specialist provision.
Qualifications: You must hold a QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and have a genuine passion for working with children who have complex and additional learning needs.
Strong Behaviour Management Skills: Experience using effective and compassionate behaviour management strategies tailored to children with ASC and SEMH, including de-escalation techniques and therapeutic support.
Adaptability: A creative approach to lesson planning, and the ability to quickly adapt resources and strategies to meet the diverse needs of the children in your class.
Team Player: You will need to work collaboratively with teaching assistants, therapists, and the wider school team to ensure each child receives the highest standard of care and education.
About the School:
This specialist SEND school caters to children with a range of complex needs, including Autism, SEMH, Speech and Language difficulties, and other developmental delays. The school focuses on providing a holistic approach to education, ensuring that every child has access to a personalised curriculum that supports both their academic and social-emotional growth.
With a supportive leadership team and a strong focus on professional development, this school is committed to providing the highest level of support for its staff and students.
What’s on Offer:
A full-time, maternity cover position with a competitive salary (depending on experience).
Comprehensive support from a dedicated team of teaching assistants, speech and language therapists, and other professionals.
Professional development opportunities tailored to SEND education, with regular training and workshops.
The chance to make a real difference to the lives of children with complex needs, working in a collaborative and supportive environment.
