Job Title: PMLD 2:1 School Care Assistant
PMLD Teaching Assistant (2:1 Support) – Islington Position: PMLD Teaching Assistant Location: Islington, London Type: Full-time, Term-time Support Ratio: 2:1 Start Date: Immediate Are you passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of children with PMLD? Do you have the skills, patience, and dedication to support a child with complex needs? We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Teaching Assistant to join our specialist team in Islington, working on a 2:1 support basis with a student who requires high-level care and tailored support throughout the school day. Key Responsibilities: -Direct 2:1 Support: Work closely with a second TA to deliver consistent and reliable support for a child with PMLD, ensuring their physical, emotional, and learning needs are met at all times. -Personal Care Assistance: Provide sensitive, dignified support with personal care tasks, including feeding, toileting, and mobility assistance, as needed. -Learning Support: Collaborate with teachers to adapt educational materials and activities to support the child’s unique learning needs in line with their EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan). -Medical Assistance: Manage any medical or therapeutic requirements the student may have, which could include administering medication, handling mobility aids, or following medical guidelines, in coordination with school staff and healthcare professionals. -Behavioural and Emotional Support: Foster a positive, inclusive learning environment by managing challenging behaviour with patience and positivity, using strategies suited to the child’s individual needs. Essential Requirements: Experience in SEND Settings: Demonstrated experience working with children with profound and multiple learning disabilities or other complex needs in a school or specialist setting. Knowledge of PMLD Support Needs: An in-depth understanding of PMLD and the ability to respond to the sensory, physical, and cognitive needs of students with severe learning disabilities. Training in Personal Care and Health Needs: Confidence and competency in handling personal care tasks, with relevant training in paediatric first aid and familiarity with medical equipment (e.g., feeding tubes) being highly desirable. Patience, Empathy, and Adaptability: An empathetic approach to working with children with complex needs, as well as the flexibility to respond to varied daily requirements and adjust strategies accordingly. Desirable Skills: Communication Techniques: Proficiency in alternative communication methods, such as Makaton or PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), would be advantageous. Relevant Certifications: Training or qualifications in SEND, ASD awareness, or sensory integration would strengthen your application.
