Job Title: Autism Teaching Assistant
Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant | From £89/day | Barking & Dagenham | September Start | Full Time | Long Term Supply Axcis are working with a supportive and inclusive secondary school in Barking and Dagenham to recruit a Teaching Assistant with experience supporting students with autism. This full-time, long-term role is to start in September and is ideal for someone who is patient, structured and confident working with young people in Key Stage 3 and 4. The school has a strong SEN department and provides a calm, structured environment to help autistic students access the curriculum and thrive socially. You will be working closely with teaching staff and the SENCO to provide tailored 1:1 and small group support for pupils with a range of needs across the autism spectrum. In this role, you will: • Support autistic students with accessing lessons, communication, and emotional regulation throughout the school day. • Use visual supports such as timetables and now/next boards to promote structure and reduce anxiety. • Help manage sensory sensitivities and low-level behaviours that may arise due to transitions or changes in routine. • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs and therapists to implement EHCP targets and autism-specific strategies. • Foster social skills, independence and self-esteem in both classroom and unstructured settings. What we’re looking for: • Previous experience working with children or young people with autism, ideally in a secondary or specialist setting. • Familiarity with autism strategies such as PECS, TEACCH, Zones of Regulation or sensory circuits. • A calm, consistent and empathetic approach, with a focus on positive reinforcement and relationship building. • Confidence in supporting behaviour and communication challenges in a respectful and proactive way.
