Job Title: Autism School Support Assistant
Are you looking for a genuinely rewarding role where you can make a meaningful difference in the lives of autistic young people?
We are recruiting for a full-time Autism Specialist School Support Assistant to work with post-16 students with autism and associated learning disabilities in a specialist college setting in Radstock. This is a unique opportunity to support autistic learners in a structured, understanding, and autism-informed environment that prioritises independence, communication, and preparation for adulthood.
The college is well-regarded locally for its specialist autism provision and inclusive ethos. Its most recent Ofsted inspection praised its calm, nurturing environment, strong student support, and commitment to helping learners develop confidence, self-regulation, communication skills, and employability. Staff work collaboratively to create predictable, low-arousal spaces where students feel safe, understood, and able to thrive.
The role:
Full-time, Monday to Friday (8:30am–4:30pm)
£14.25 per hour
Immediate start, with a permanent position offered after a 16-week settling-in period
Supporting autistic students in both classroom learning and practical, life-skills activities
Using autism-specific approaches (such as visual supports, structured routines, and clear communication strategies)
Promoting emotional regulation, sensory needs, and positive behaviour support
Encouraging independence, social understanding, and functional communication
Who we’re looking for:
You don’t need years of experience in education—what matters most is your understanding, patience, and willingness to learn about autism.
This role could suit:
Graduates exploring careers in education, psychology, or speech and language therapy
Youth workers or support workers with experience in SEN or autism
Sports coaches or team leaders who can provide structure and positive role modelling
Anyone calm, empathetic, and motivated to support autistic young people
You’ll be:
Patient, consistent, and able to adapt your communication style
Comfortable supporting sensory needs and emotional regulation
Observant and responsive to individual differences
Passionate about helping students build confidence and independence
Why this role?
You’ll be part of a welcoming, highly supportive team in a setting where relationships are key, small achievements are celebrated, and every student is understood as an individual. Your work will have a real, lasting impact on young people as they develop the skills they need for adult life.
