What to Do When Your Supply Placement Ends: A Guide for Supply Teachers, Teaching Assistants and Education Support Staff

Whether your placement lasted one day, one week, one term or an entire academic year, its conclusion is an opportunity to reflect on what you achieved and prepare for what comes next.

Supply teachers, teaching assistants and education support staff regularly move between different schools, classrooms and contracts. Every placement can help you develop new skills, gain experience and strengthen your CV.

Taking a few practical steps before and after your placement ends can help you finish professionally, complete important administration and remain ready for your next opportunity.

Quick checklist: Return school property, complete your timesheets, leave an appropriate handover, update your CV and availability, check your compliance documents and tell your teaching agency what you would like to do next.

1. Finish your placement professionally

First impressions matter, but so do final impressions.

Before leaving your placement, make sure you have:

returned your staff identification badge, keys or access fob

returned any laptops, tablets or classroom equipment you borrowed

removed personal information from any equipment, where appropriate

left classrooms, resources and work areas organised

completed any agreed marking or administrative tasks

thanked the staff you worked alongside

Professionalism, reliability and consideration are qualities that schools remember. Finishing well may contribute to positive feedback, repeat bookings or future opportunities.

If the school asks you to return for another booking, let your consultant know. Bookings arranged through Axcis should be communicated through the appropriate Axcis process.

2. Complete your timesheets and outstanding administration

Before or shortly after your placement finishes, check that your timesheets have been completed and submitted correctly.

Make sure:

the dates and working hours are accurate

any half days or additional agreed hours are recorded correctly

your timesheet has been submitted for approval

queries are raised while the relevant school staff are still available

your contact and payment information is current

Schools may need to approve your timesheet before payment can be processed. Completing everything promptly helps reduce the risk of avoidable payment delays.

If you believe information is missing or you are unsure how to complete a timesheet, contact your consultant or the appropriate Axcis team before the submission deadline.

3. Leave an appropriate handover

If you worked in a longer-term role, you may be asked to leave a handover for the class teacher, support team or person taking over the placement.

Depending on your responsibilities, this might include:

the work or curriculum content covered

tasks that remain outstanding

successful classroom routines

resources you used or prepared

agreed communication approaches

strategies already included in pupil support plans

relevant information about forthcoming activities or deadlines

Keep the handover factual, relevant and professional. Do not include personal opinions, informal labels or confidential information that the recipient does not need.

Safeguarding concerns and significant incidents should already have been reported through the setting’s procedures. A handover document must never be used as a substitute for an immediate safeguarding report.

4. Ask for appropriate feedback

Where appropriate, ask the relevant school contact for constructive feedback about your placement.

You might ask:

What went particularly well?

Were there any areas I could develop?

Did the setting feel that my skills suited the role?

Would the school be happy to have me return?

Feedback can help you recognise strengths, identify useful training and understand which roles or settings may suit you in future.

If feedback is provided directly to Axcis, ask your consultant whether there are any points they can appropriately share with you.

5. Update your CV while the experience is fresh

It is much easier to update your CV immediately after a placement than to remember the details several months later.

Consider adding:

the type of school or education setting

the age groups or education phases you supported

relevant SEND experience

your classroom and curriculum responsibilities

communication approaches you used

behaviour support experience

interventions you delivered or supported

new systems, resources or technologies you used

training completed during the placement

specific achievements or additional responsibilities

Keep the information factual and do not include identifiable or confidential details about pupils.

Rather than listing only general duties, explain the support you provided and the skills you developed. Our guide to what schools actually notice on SEND CVs provides further practical advice.

6. Tell your consultant when you are available

Do not wait until you need a new placement before updating your consultant.

As soon as you know your availability, tell them:

which days you can work

when your current placement ends

whether you want daily supply, short-term, long-term or permanent work

whether you are looking for full-time or part-time opportunities

the locations you can realistically reach

the age groups and education settings you prefer

whether your role preferences have changed

Current information helps your consultant understand which opportunities may be suitable for you. It does not guarantee an immediate placement, but it means you can be considered using accurate details.

Already registered with Axcis? Update the Axcis App

Registered Axcis candidates can use the Axcis App to manage important information connected to their education work.

Depending on your candidate and placement status, you can use the app to:

update your availability

view upcoming bookings

manage timesheet information

upload requested documents

search for education jobs

receive messages and notifications from Axcis

Keeping your availability current is one of the simplest ways to help your consultant understand when you can work.

If you have not used the app before, read our practical guide to the Axcis App.

Do not rely only on an app update if your availability changes at short notice or you need to discuss a confirmed booking. Contact your consultant directly in those situations.

7. Check your compliance information

Being ready for another placement depends on your candidate and compliance information remaining current.

Check whether Axcis needs updated information relating to:

your contact details

your address

your Right to Work documentation

your Disclosure and Barring Service information

the DBS Update Service, where applicable

references

qualifications

safeguarding or mandatory training

any other documents requested by the compliance team

Requirements vary according to the individual, role and setting. Contact your consultant or the Axcis compliance team if you are unsure whether anything needs to be renewed or updated.

Only provide documents through an approved Axcis process and never send passwords or unnecessary sensitive information.

8. Continue developing your skills

A gap between placements can provide an opportunity to reflect on your professional development.

Think about whether further learning would help you build confidence in areas such as:

safeguarding and child protection

autism

ADHD

social, emotional and mental health needs

communication and interaction

behaviour support

inclusive classroom practice

trauma-informed practice

mental health and wellbeing

classroom management

Registered Axcis candidates can access professional development through The Axcis Academy, including training provided in partnership with The National College.

Choose training that is relevant to your role and experience. Completing a general course does not replace setting-specific guidance or practical training required for particular responsibilities.

9. Take time to recharge

Working in education can be physically, mentally and emotionally demanding. A break between placements does not have to be filled entirely with administration and professional development.

Where your circumstances allow, make time to rest, reconnect with life outside work and reflect on what you need from your next role.

You might consider:

what you enjoyed about the placement

which parts of the role affected your wellbeing

whether the working pattern was sustainable

which environments helped you feel supported

what boundaries you want to maintain in future

Our guide to looking after your wellbeing while working in education contains additional practical guidance.

10. Reflect on what you want next

Every placement gives you more information about the work, environments and responsibilities that suit you.

Before discussing your next opportunity, consider:

Which parts of the placement did I enjoy most?

Which skills did I use or develop?

Which age groups and education settings suited me?

What level of responsibility am I ready for?

Would I prefer greater flexibility or more continuity?

What travel distance is realistic and sustainable?

Is there additional support or training I need?

Share this information honestly with your consultant. A suitable placement is not only about being available; it is also about matching your experience, preferences and circumstances with the needs of the setting.

Frequently asked questions

When should I tell my teaching agency that I am available?

Tell your teaching agency as soon as you know when your placement will end and when you can work again. Include your preferred working pattern, locations, roles and education settings so your consultant has accurate information.

Should I update my CV after every placement?

Yes. Even a short placement may add useful experience. Updating your CV promptly makes it easier to record your responsibilities and achievements accurately.

What if I only worked at the school for one day?

Short bookings still demonstrate adaptability, reliability and experience of different school environments. You may not need to add every single-day booking as a separate CV entry, but you can summarise relevant supply experience and the settings in which you worked.

Should I ask the school for a reference?

Speak to your consultant before arranging references directly. Axcis can explain what information may be required and the appropriate process for your circumstances.

Can supply work lead to a long-term or permanent role?

It can. Some schools use supply placements to meet an immediate need and may later consider suitable candidates for longer-term opportunities. However, this is not guaranteed, and any proposed change should be discussed through the correct process.

What if my placement ended unexpectedly?

Contact your consultant to discuss what happened and confirm your availability. Keep the conversation factual and provide any relevant information. If the placement affected your wellbeing or raised a safeguarding or safety concern, explain this so that it can be handled appropriately.

Do I need to register again when a placement ends?

If you are already registered with Axcis, you should not complete another registration form unless an Axcis team member asks you to do so. Update your availability and contact your consultant about your next placement.

Resources to help you prepare for your next opportunity

Finishing a placement is not only an ending. It is an opportunity to recognise what you learned, update your professional information and decide what you would like from your next role.

If you are already registered with Axcis, update your availability, keep your candidate information current and contact your consultant when you are ready to discuss your next opportunity.

Looking After Your Wellbeing While Working in Education

Working in education can be immensely rewarding, but it can also be physically, mentally and emotionally demanding.

Whether you are a teacher, teaching assistant, higher-level teaching assistant, cover supervisor, learning support assistant or another education professional, your working day may involve responding to changing needs, building relationships, managing competing priorities and helping children and young people feel safe and supported.

This is true across both SEND and mainstream education. It can be particularly noticeable for supply staff who regularly move between settings, learn new routines and adapt to different teams and expectations.

Looking after your wellbeing is not a luxury or a sign that you are less committed to your role. It is an important part of building a sustainable career in education and recognising when you may need additional support.

Why wellbeing matters when you work in education

Education professionals are often focused on the wellbeing of the children and young people they support. However, constantly concentrating on the needs of others can make it easy to overlook your own.

Looking after your wellbeing can help you:

recognise stress before it becomes overwhelming

recover after challenging or emotionally demanding days

maintain healthy and realistic boundaries

manage change with greater confidence

ask for help when you need it

continue working in education in a sustainable way

Wellbeing is individual. What helps one person may not be right for another, and your needs may change depending on your role, setting and circumstances.

Notice what affects your wellbeing

Regularly checking in with yourself can help you recognise changes in how you are feeling. This does not mean analysing every difficult day. It means paying attention to patterns that may suggest you need rest, practical adjustments or additional support.

You might notice:

difficulty switching off after work

changes to your sleep, appetite or energy

feeling unusually anxious, irritable or overwhelmed

dreading work for an extended period

regularly missing breaks or working beyond reasonable limits

finding it more difficult to concentrate or make decisions

feeling emotionally affected by particular situations or incidents

These experiences do not necessarily mean that something is seriously wrong, but persistent or worsening changes should not be ignored. Speaking to someone early can make it easier to identify what support may help.

Practical ways to support your wellbeing during the school day

There is no single wellbeing routine that will suit every person or every education setting. Small, realistic actions can nevertheless make a meaningful difference.

Where your role and the school day allow, try to:

take your agreed breaks rather than routinely working through them

drink water and eat regularly throughout the day

ask questions when responsibilities, routines or expectations are unclear

identify who you should speak to if you need practical or emotional support

pause briefly after a demanding interaction before moving to the next task

focus on realistic priorities rather than expecting yourself to complete everything at once

use the support and supervision arrangements available within the setting

If you are involved in a safeguarding concern, serious incident or situation that leaves you feeling unsettled, follow the setting’s reporting procedures and speak to the appropriate member of staff. You should not be expected to carry concerns alone.

Create a transition between work and home

Moving directly from a busy working day into home responsibilities can make it difficult to mentally leave work behind. A simple transition routine can help signal that the working day has ended.

This might include:

taking a short walk after work

listening to music or a podcast during your journey home

changing clothes when you arrive home

turning off work-related notifications at an agreed time

writing down non-confidential reminders for the next day

making time for an activity that helps you relax or reconnect with other parts of your life

Remember that confidential information about pupils, colleagues or settings should never be included in personal notes or discussed outside appropriate professional channels.

Protect your professional boundaries

Healthy boundaries are not about being unhelpful. They allow you to work safely, professionally and within the responsibilities of your role.

This may mean:

asking for clarification if you are unsure what is expected of you

speaking up if you are asked to complete a task for which you have not been trained

taking the breaks to which you are entitled

being realistic about your availability and travel distance

not accepting placements that you know are unsuitable for your experience or circumstances

contacting your teaching agency if a placement differs significantly from the information you were given

Clear communication allows schools, education settings and consultants to understand what support you need and which opportunities are likely to be suitable for you.

Find approaches that work for you

Wellbeing advice can sometimes feel like another list of things to complete. You do not need to adopt every recommendation or create a perfect routine.

Instead, consider one or two manageable approaches that fit your circumstances, such as:

spending time outdoors

building regular movement into your week

maintaining a consistent sleep routine where possible

making time for hobbies and relationships outside work

talking to someone you trust

using breathing, mindfulness or grounding exercises if you find them helpful

reflecting on positive moments as well as difficult ones

seeking professional support when self-help strategies are not enough

The aim is not to remove every source of pressure. It is to understand what helps you recover, maintain perspective and respond when something is affecting you.

What should supply staff do when a placement affects their wellbeing?

Supply work can offer valuable flexibility and experience, but unfamiliar routines, unclear expectations or unsuitable placements can sometimes affect your wellbeing.

If you experience a problem during a placement:

Speak to the appropriate school contact where it is safe and appropriate to do so.

Report safeguarding concerns immediately through the setting’s safeguarding procedures.

Make a factual note of relevant information without retaining confidential pupil information.

Contact your consultant if the role differs from what was agreed, your responsibilities are unclear or you feel that you do not have the support required to work safely.

Your consultant needs accurate information to understand the situation, communicate with the setting where appropriate and help identify suitable next steps.

Wellbeing support for registered Axcis candidates

Axcis is a specialist SEND teaching agency that also supports a growing number of mainstream education roles across England and South Wales. Our candidate support extends beyond helping education professionals find their next placement.

Registered Axcis candidates have access to the Still Human wellbeing app. Designed for people working in education, the app includes:

daily wellbeing check-ins

guided mindfulness exercises

expert articles

podcasts and videos

practical wellbeing resources

These resources can be used throughout the year, whether you are working in one long-term setting, completing short-term supply placements or preparing for your next role.

Already registered with Axcis?

Contact your Axcis consultant to ask for help accessing the Still Human wellbeing app.

If you cannot remember who your consultant is, email info@axcis.co.uk and the team will help put you in touch with the right person.

Registered candidates can also access professional development through The Axcis Academy, including training provided in partnership with The National College.

When should you seek additional help?

Wellbeing resources and everyday habits can be useful, but they are not a replacement for professional mental health care.

Consider speaking to your GP or another qualified health professional if stress, anxiety, low mood or other changes are persistent, worsening or affecting your sleep, relationships, work or daily life.

You can also find confidential support through Education Support’s helpline for education staff.

If you or someone else needs urgent mental health help, use the NHS guidance on getting urgent mental health support. Call 999 or go to A&E if there is an immediate danger to life.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to feel tired after working in a school?

Education work can be physically and emotionally demanding, so some tiredness after a busy day is understandable. If exhaustion is persistent, worsening or affecting your daily life, consider speaking to your GP or another qualified health professional.

How can I switch off after a difficult school day?

A consistent end-of-day routine may help. This could include a short walk, changing clothes, limiting work notifications or talking through a concern using the appropriate professional support channels. Avoid taking confidential information home or discussing identifiable pupils outside work.

Should I tell my teaching agency if a placement is affecting my wellbeing?

Yes. Contact your consultant if the placement differs from what was agreed, you do not feel adequately supported, your responsibilities are unclear or you have concerns about your ability to work safely. Safeguarding concerns must also be reported immediately through the setting’s procedures.

Who can access the Still Human wellbeing app?

The Still Human wellbeing app is available as a benefit for registered Axcis candidates. Contact your consultant or email info@axcis.co.uk for help accessing it.

Can a wellbeing app replace professional mental health support?

No. A wellbeing app may provide useful resources and everyday support, but it is not a substitute for advice, diagnosis or treatment from a qualified health professional.

Looking after yourself supports a sustainable education career

Caring about your wellbeing does not make you less dedicated to the children and young people you support. Recognising your limits, using available resources and asking for help are important parts of working safely and sustainably in education.

Your wellbeing needs will not always remain the same. Continue checking in with yourself, communicate when something is not working and seek appropriate support when you need it.

What Do Schools Mean by "Behaviour Specialist" in Job Descriptions?

If you have been searching for school support roles, you may have come across a vacancy for a Behaviour Specialist and felt a little unsure what to make of it. Is it clinical? Do you need a specific qualification? Are they expecting someone who already has years of specialist training?

The short answer is: probably not. The title sounds more formal than the role often is, and many of the most effective people in these positions have come from care work, youth work, sports coaching, or residential support, rather than from a traditional classroom route.

This guide breaks down what schools actually mean when they use this title, what you would be doing day-to-day, and what they are really looking for in a candidate.

Why the title varies so much

Unlike teaching roles, there is no single definition of 'Behaviour Specialist' in education. Different schools use different language for the same job. You might see it advertised as:

Behaviour Support Worker

SEMH Teaching Assistant

Behaviour Mentor

Pastoral Support Assistant

Learning Mentor

Behaviour Teaching Assistant

The titles differ, but the purpose is usually the same: helping pupils who find the school environment genuinely difficult to get through the day, and to stay engaged with learning.

A LinkedIn comment we saw recently put it well: someone noted that job descriptions for these roles can sometimes sound more polished than the day-to-day reality. That is a fair point worth acknowledging. The role can be unpredictable, and working with young people who have complex needs is not always straightforward. But for the right person, it is also one of the most meaningful roles in a school.

What 'behaviour' actually means in this context

In modern education, behaviour is understood as a form of communication. When a pupil is disrupting a lesson, refusing to engage, or becoming distressed, schools are increasingly trained to ask 'what is this young person trying to tell us?' rather than simply responding to the incident.

The reasons behind challenging behaviour might include:

Anxiety or fear about failure

Unmet SEND or learning needs

Trauma or difficult home experiences

Social difficulties or isolation

Emotional dysregulation

Sensory overwhelm

Low confidence or self-esteem

Your job as a Behaviour Specialist is not to act as a disciplinarian. It is to understand what is driving the behaviour and to help the young person manage it calmly, consistently, and with enough trust built over time that they feel safe with you.

What does the role look like day-to-day?

Picture a Year 9 pupil who has been excluded from two previous schools. They arrive each morning already on edge. Your morning might involve meeting them at the gate, checking in before the day starts, helping them settle into lessons, and being present when transitions or the moments between classes begin to feel overwhelming.

You might support 1:1, work with a small group, or float across a year group depending on need. You will likely be involved in:

Supporting pupils with SEMH (social, emotional and mental health) needs

Using de-escalation or positive behaviour strategies during difficult moments

Building consistent, trusting relationships with individual pupils

Helping pupils re-engage after a difficult moment or exclusion

Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams

Recording incidents and observations professionally

Participating in reviews, EHCPs, and support plan meetings

No two days are identical. The role requires patience, resilience, and the ability to remain calm when those around you are not.

What is SEMH, and why does it keep appearing in job descriptions?

SEMH stands for Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. It is a category of special educational needs and disabilities that covers a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, low mood, attachment difficulties, trauma responses, ADHD, and behavioural needs.

Schools and education settings supporting pupils with SEMH needs can include Alternative Provision (AP) settings, Short Stay Schools, specialist SEMH schools, Inclusion Bases, and Pupil Referral Units (PRUs). While the term PRU is still commonly used across education, many schools and local authorities now use broader terminology such as Alternative Provision or Short Stay School.

These settings often look for staff who can build positive relationships, remain calm under pressure, and support pupils who may have experienced significant barriers to learning or difficult life experiences.

What about Team Teach? Do you need it?

Team Teach is a widely used training framework in education that focuses on positive behaviour support, de-escalation, and safe physical intervention where necessary.

Many Alternative Provision settings, SEMH schools, Inclusion Bases, and PRUs prefer candidates who have completed Team Teach training, although it is not always essential before starting a role. Schools and recruitment agencies will often provide access to training as part of the onboarding process.

Axcis has certified in-house Team Teach facilitators who run regular training sessions exclusively for registered Axcis candidates. If you are registered with us and want to know when the next session is taking place, speak to your consultant and they will give you the details.

Alongside Team Teach, registered candidates also have access to The Axcis Academy, our dedicated CPD and career development programme, delivered in partnership with The National College. This includes a wide range of courses relevant to behaviour support work, including Prevent Training and a variety of SEMH-focused modules.

What backgrounds do schools value?

Alongside classroom experience, schools consistently value people coming from:

Domiciliary or residential care

Youth work or youth offending teams

Mental health support roles

Sports coaching or mentoring

Community outreach

Psychology or social science graduates looking for applied experience

The common thread is not a qualification. It is the ability to build trust with a young person who may not easily trust adults and to stay steady when things get difficult.

Is this role right for you?

Ask yourself:

Can you stay calm when a child or young person is not?

Can you show up consistently, day after day, for someone who may not find it easy to show up for themselves?

Are you patient, empathetic or resilient enough to build trust slowly, without forcing it?

If the answer is yes, you may be closer to ready than the job title suggests.

Looking for behaviour support roles?

Axcis works with schools across England and South Wales to place experienced and aspiring support staff in roles that match their background and strengths.

Whether you have classroom experience, Team Teach training, or transferable skills from care or youth work, we would love to talk.

Browse live behaviour support jobs or register with Axcis today.

axcis.co.uk/jobs

How to Stay Ready for Your Next Education Placement: A Checklist for Supply Staff

Supply work can change quickly. A placement may finish, your availability may change or a suitable opportunity may become available at short notice.

Keeping your details accurate helps your teaching agency understand when, where and how you would like to work. It can also reduce delays when a suitable SEND or mainstream education role becomes available.

This evergreen checklist is for supply teachers, teaching assistants, HLTAs, cover supervisors, learning support assistants and other education support staff registered with Axcis Education.

Your placement-readiness checklist

To help Axcis match you with suitable opportunities, regularly check that the following information is current:

Your available working days

The locations you can realistically reach

Your preferred roles, age groups and education settings

Your contact details

Your CV and recent experience

Your compliance documents

Your training and qualifications

Your availability calendar in the Axcis App

You do not need to wait until the beginning of a new term to update these details. Let your consultant know whenever something changes.

Is your availability up to date?

Availability is one of the most important details to keep current.

Your circumstances may change during the academic year. You might become available for additional days, need to reduce your working week or have specific dates when you cannot accept work.

Make sure your consultant knows:

Which days of the week you can work

Whether you are looking for full-time or part-time work

Whether you are available for daily supply

Whether you would consider short-term or long-term placements

When you can start

About any upcoming dates when you will be unavailable

Registered Axcis candidates can also use the Axcis App to keep their availability calendar current.

Accurate availability means your consultant is less likely to contact you about work you cannot accept and better placed to speak to you when a suitable opportunity arises.

How far can you realistically travel?

Travel preferences are just as important as availability.

Consider how far you can comfortably travel each day and whether that changes depending on the length or type of placement. A journey that is manageable for a long-term opportunity may not be practical for a single day of supply work.

Tell your consultant:

Which areas you can reach

How you usually travel

How long you are willing to spend travelling

Whether you rely on public transport

Whether your travel range changes for longer-term roles

About any locations that are not practical for you

Be realistic rather than giving the widest possible area. Clear travel preferences help your consultant identify opportunities that are genuinely workable for you.

Have your role and setting preferences changed?

Experience can change what you are interested in.

A teaching assistant may discover an interest in a particular age group. A mainstream teacher may want to develop their SEND experience. Someone who has worked in an alternative provision may decide they would like more opportunities in similar settings.

Review whether your consultant knows:

The roles you would like to consider

The age groups you prefer

Whether you are interested in SEND, mainstream or both

The types of settings in which you feel most confident

Any areas in which you would like to gain experience

Whether you would consider temporary, long-term or permanent work

Any responsibilities you are not trained or authorised to undertake

Preferences help guide the search, but they can evolve. Let your consultant know when your interests, experience or career goals change.

Are your contact details correct?

Your teaching agency needs to be able to reach you when a relevant opportunity arises.

Check that Axcis has your current:

Mobile number

Email address

Home address

Emergency contact details, where required

Preferred method of contact

If you change your telephone number, email address or home address, tell your consultant promptly.

It is also worth checking your voicemail and email regularly when you are actively looking for work. If you miss a call, respond when you can rather than assuming the opportunity is no longer available.

Is your CV current?

Your CV should develop as your experience grows.

Update it after completing a significant placement, taking on new responsibilities or completing relevant training. Making small updates regularly is easier than trying to remember everything several months later.

Consider adding:

The type of education setting

The age groups you supported

Your main responsibilities

Relevant SEND experience

Communication approaches you used

Classroom or behaviour-support experience

Interventions or programmes you supported

Training and qualifications

Achievements or examples of positive impact

Do not include confidential information or details that could identify individual children or young people.

For further guidance, read our article on What Schools Actually Notice on SEND CVs .

Are your compliance documents current?

Compliance is an essential part of working safely in education.

The documents or checks required will depend on your circumstances, role and placement. Your Axcis consultant or compliance team will tell you if anything needs to be supplied, renewed or reviewed.

This may include:

Right to Work documentation

Proof of address

References

DBS information

Safeguarding training

Relevant qualifications or certificates

Additional documentation required for a particular role

A DBS certificate does not have an official expiry date, but a teaching agency or education setting may require a new check or updated information depending on its safeguarding procedures and the circumstances of the placement.

Do not wait until you are due to begin work to respond to a compliance request. Providing requested information promptly can help prevent unnecessary delays.

If you are unsure whether anything is outstanding, contact the Axcis compliance team or speak to your consultant.

Have you completed any new training?

Professional development can strengthen your knowledge, build confidence and help you prepare for a wider range of education settings.

Tell your consultant when you complete relevant training or gain a new qualification. This could include learning related to:

Safeguarding

Autism

ADHD

Social, emotional and mental health needs

Communication

Positive approaches to behaviour support

Trauma-informed practice

Moving and handling

Personal care

Medical needs

Specific teaching subjects or age groups

Training does not automatically authorise you to carry out every associated task. Always follow the individual setting’s procedures and do not undertake medical, personal care, physical intervention or moving and handling duties without the necessary training, information and authorisation.

Registered Axcis candidates can access continuing professional development through the Axcis Academy .

Are you using the Axcis App?

The Axcis App helps registered candidates manage important parts of their work with Axcis.

Depending on the features available to you, the app can help you:

Update your availability

View upcoming bookings

Manage timesheets

Search for education jobs

Upload requested documents

Access important placement information

Check that you can sign in and that the information shown is accurate. If you experience a problem with the app or something does not match what you have agreed with your consultant, contact Axcis for support.

The app is useful, but it does not replace direct communication. Speak to your consultant when your circumstances, preferences or career goals change.

What should you check before accepting a placement?

Before agreeing to a placement, make sure you understand the essential details.

Ask about:

The school or education setting

The location and correct site

The role and expected responsibilities

The age group or class

The start and anticipated end date

The working hours

Whether the role is daily, short-term or long-term

Any essential experience or training requirements

Who you should report to

Any other practical information available at that stage

Not every detail about individual learners can or should be shared before a booking is confirmed. However, you should receive enough information to decide whether the role is appropriate for your experience and whether you can reach the setting reliably.

If the role is substantially different when you arrive, or you are asked to undertake responsibilities that were not agreed, contact your consultant.

How should you prepare once a placement is confirmed?

Once you have accepted a booking:

Confirm the address and correct site.

Plan your journey.

Check your arrival time.

Review the agreed role information.

Make sure you know who to report to.

Take any identification or documents you have specifically been asked to bring.

Save your consultant’s contact details.

Ask if there is anything else you need to know before arriving.

Every school and education setting works differently. You are not expected to know every routine on your first day, but you should ask questions, observe established approaches and follow the setting’s safeguarding procedures.

Read our universal guide: Your First Day in a New School or Education Setting: What You Need to Know .

What if you have not worked for a while?

If you have had a break from education work, contact your consultant before marking yourself as fully available.

You may need to:

Update your CV

Provide more recent information or documents

Review your references

Complete current safeguarding training

Discuss any changes to your preferred roles

Confirm when you are ready to return

Refresh your knowledge through CPD

A break does not necessarily prevent you from returning to education work. Giving Axcis accurate information helps the team explain the next steps and identify anything that needs to be completed before you can accept another placement.

How often should you update your teaching agency?

You do not need to contact your consultant every day. You should, however, provide an update whenever important information changes.

Contact Axcis if:

Your available days change

You become available for work

You accept work elsewhere

Your travel range changes

You want to explore different roles or settings

Your contact details change

You complete relevant training

You gain new experience

You need to pause your availability

You are ready to return after a break

You have questions about your compliance status

Even when nothing major has changed, an occasional check-in can confirm that your recorded preferences remain accurate.

Frequently asked questions

Should I update my availability even if it has not changed?

If your availability calendar is already accurate, you do not need to make unnecessary changes. However, it is worth checking it regularly and confirming that your consultant has the correct information.

Can I change the types of roles I want?

Yes. Your role and setting preferences may change as you gain experience. Tell your consultant what you would now like to consider and discuss whether you need any additional experience or training.

Should I say that I can travel anywhere to increase my chances of finding work?

No. Give a realistic travel range. Being contacted about placements you cannot reliably reach is frustrating for you, the school and your consultant.

Do I need to update my CV after every day of supply work?

Not necessarily. Update it when a placement has added meaningful experience, responsibilities, skills or training. You can keep private notes of shorter assignments to help you remember the range of settings in which you have worked, but do not record confidential learner information.

Does my DBS certificate expire?

DBS certificates do not have an official expiry date. However, employers and teaching agencies can determine when a new check or updated information is required. Follow the instructions given by Axcis or the relevant education setting.

Can updating my availability guarantee me work?

No. Updating your details cannot guarantee a placement. It does, however, help your consultant understand which opportunities are appropriate and when you are able to work.

Should I contact Axcis if I accept work elsewhere?

Yes. Let your consultant know that you are no longer available, or update the relevant dates in the Axcis App. This helps prevent unnecessary calls and ensures that your record remains accurate.

Keep your details accurate and your options open

Staying ready for your next education placement does not mean accepting every role or making yourself available at all times.

It means giving your teaching agency clear, current information about when you can work, where you can travel and which opportunities are suitable for you.

Keep your availability, preferences, CV and compliance information up to date. Use the Axcis App where appropriate, stay in contact with your consultant and ask whenever you are unsure about what is required.

Small updates can make the process clearer for everyone and help Axcis approach you about SEND and mainstream education opportunities that better reflect your experience, availability and goals.

Check your availability in the Axcis App and contact your consultant if your working days, travel range, role preferences or contact details have changed.

View the latest education jobs Contact your local Axcis team

Ace Your SEND Education Job Interview

The 20-Word Introduction That Gets You the Job: How to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself” in SEND Interviews

Why First Impressions Matter

Your interview begins long before you finish your first answer. The question “Tell me about yourself” is asked in almost every SEND interview, and many educators lose the interview panel’s attention within 30 seconds.

Why? Because they talk about themselves instead of what matters most: the pupils.

The Mistake Most Education Professionals Make

Interview panels often hear the same introduction again and again:

Qualifications and training dates

Years of experience in order

Job titles and school names

Generic statements like “I enjoy working with children”

The issue? Your CV already tells that story. What interviewers are really asking is: “Why should we choose you for our pupils?”

A Story: TA Sarah’s Turning Point

Sarah, a Teaching Assistant, once began her answer with training dates and school names. She noticed the panel switch off.

At her next interview, she tried a new approach:
“I help non-verbal pupils find their voice and join in with their classmates.”

Twelve words. The panel leaned forward. “That’s exactly what we need, tell me more.”

This time, she got the job.

The 20-Word Interview Rule

Your introduction should be:

Under 20 words

Focused on pupil outcomes

Specific enough to be memorable

Template: “I help [type of pupils] to [key outcome] and [key outcome].”

SEND Interview Examples That May Work Instead

❌ “I’ve worked with SEMH pupils in primary and secondary schools.”

✅ “I help pupils with anxiety and trauma to trust adults, manage emotions and succeed.”

❌ “I’m trained in Makaton and PECS.”

✅ “I give non-verbal pupils tools to communicate, make choices and build friendships.”

❌ “I support pupils with sensory processing difficulties.”

✅ “I help pupils with sensory needs feel regulated, focused and ready to learn.”

Why It Works

A concise, pupil-focused introduction sparks curiosity. It makes the panel picture their own pupils benefiting from your support and invites deeper questions about your approach.

Make Your First Interview Impression Count

Your introduction is more than a formality; it’s your chance to show how you’ll make a difference for children and young people with SEND. Master those first 20 words, and you’ll set yourself apart from the very start.

How to Prepare for Your First Day in a SEND Setting

Starting a new role in a special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) setting is an exciting opportunity, but it’s completely normal to have a few first-day butterflies! Whether you're a seasoned educator stepping into a new environment or supporting children for the very first time, a bit of preparation goes a long way.

Here’s how to set yourself up for success on day one:

1. Confirm the Details

Save your Axcis consultant’s contact details in your phone and keep a hard copy as well in case you misplace your phone and need to contact them for support on the day.

Check the Axcis App beforehand for booking details, including the school’s name, contact person, address, and map link.

Don’t have the Axcis App yet? Download it now on Google Play or the Apple Store.

Plan your journey in advance: Check bus/train timetables or parking options and give yourself extra time for delays.

Understand school-specific policies: Every school is different, so make a note to gather all relevant information from the contact person on arrival.

        Examples include:

        · The school’s Safeguarding and Behavioural Policies
· EHCP plans for each student that you’ll be supporting
· Ask if there is any information you need to know about the setting or students.

Dress code: All Axcis candidates complete our safeguarding training, which includes key guidance on the appropriate dress code. When in doubt, opt for smart-casual and always avoid jeans, open-toed or high-heeled shoes, or shorts (unless you’re in a PE or outdoor role).

2. Pack the Essentials

Here’s a quick checklist of what to bring:

Notepad, pens, and any stationery you may need for the day

Your photo ID and your DBS certificate

A packed lunch, snacks, and a refillable water bottle

3. Observe, Listen, and Adapt

No two SEND settings are alike. Take time to:

Observe how staff interact with students

Learn the school’s routines and expectations

Identify communication strategies in use (e.g. visuals, Makaton, BSL)

🙋 Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Showing a willingness to learn is always appreciated.

4. Stay Calm and Be Flexible

Working in SEND often means embracing the unexpected. Students may need extra time, or activities may shift midday. Your ability to remain calm, patient, and adaptable is key.

5. Reflect and Check In

At the end of the day, take a moment to reflect:

What went well?

What did you learn?

Is there anything you’d like more support with?

Your Axcis consultant is always happy to hear how it went and guide you if needed.

Bonus Tip: Keep Growing

Spooky Sensory Fun for SEND Classrooms this Halloween!

Halloween can be a fun and engaging time for students, but it’s important to consider how different activities might affect students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). At Axcis, we understand the importance of making these celebrations inclusive and supportive. Here are some sensory-friendly ideas to help make Halloween fun for everyone!

1. Spooky Sensory Bins

Create themed sensory bins using safe and tactile items like dried pasta "brains," rubber spiders, or kinetic sand. These bins allow students to explore textures in a controlled, low-stress environment.

2. Calming Halloween Corners

Set up a “calming corner” with Halloween-themed stress balls, fidget toys, and noise-cancelling headphones. It gives students a safe space to step away if the excitement becomes overwhelming.

3. Pumpkin Decorating (Without the Carving!)

Instead of traditional pumpkin carving, let students decorate pumpkins with paint, stickers, or soft materials. This reduces mess and allows for more sensory-friendly creativity.

4. Sensory-Friendly Costumes

For schools allowing costumes, suggest sensory-friendly options like soft fabric costumes without scratchy tags or props. This makes dressing up more comfortable for students who may be sensitive to textures.

5. Halloween Stories with Visuals

Use Halloween-themed stories with plenty of visuals and interactive elements. Adapt the story for different learning styles by incorporating sound effects or using visual aids like puppets or illustrations.

6. Glow Stick Dance Party!

Organize a low-light, glow stick dance party. The soft lighting and colourful glow sticks can create a visually stimulating yet calming environment. Plus, it’s a great way to burn off some energy!

Keeping it Safe and Fun!

While Halloween is a time for fun and excitement, it's essential to ensure the safety and comfort of all students, especially those with SEND. Always be mindful of sensory triggers and individual needs, and create a safe space for students who may feel overwhelmed. With a little extra planning, you can make this spooky season enjoyable and inclusive for everyone.

At Axcis, we’re committed to supporting SEND educators with fun, practical resources like these. Keep an eye on our social media channels for more seasonal ideas and tips to help you in the classroom!

The Importance of Mental Health Support in SEND Education

In the provision of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) education, the focus often lies on academic support and physical accommodations. However, an equally critical aspect that deserves attention is mental health support. Ensuring the mental well-being of both students and staff in SEND settings is paramount for fostering a nurturing and effective learning environment.

Understanding the Mental Health Needs of SEND Students

Students with SEND often face unique challenges that can impact their mental health. These may include social isolation, anxiety, and difficulties with communication. Recognising these challenges is the first step in providing appropriate support. Schools and educators should be equipped with the knowledge and resources to identify signs of mental distress to be able to intervene effectively.

Strategies for Supporting Student Mental Health

Creating a Safe and Inclusive Environment: Establishing a classroom atmosphere where students feel safe, respected, and included can significantly reduce anxiety and stress. This includes promoting positive interactions and celebrating diversity.

Implementing Individualised Support Plans: Tailoring mental health support to the individual needs of each student is crucial. This might involve working with mental health professionals to develop personalised strategies and interventions.

Encouraging Open Communication: Providing students with opportunities to express their feelings and concerns can help them feel heard and understood. Regular check-ins and the use of communication aids can facilitate this process.

Incorporating Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Teaching students mindfulness practices and relaxation techniques can help them manage stress and improve their emotional regulation.

Utilising Team Teach and Positive Behaviour Management: For students exhibiting challenging behaviour, employing strategies like Team Teach and positive behaviour management can be highly effective. These approaches focus on de-escalation techniques and creating a supportive environment that encourages positive behaviour.

Supporting the Mental Health of SEND Educators

The well-being of educators is just as important as that of students. Teaching in SEND settings can be demanding, and educators may experience burnout or compassion fatigue. Here are some strategies to support their mental health:

Professional Development: The Axcis Academy offers registered Axcis Candidates a range of courses and webinars through the National College for free to aid with their tools and techniques for stress management, self-care, and mental health awareness to empower educators to take care of their own well-being. Additionally, training in Team Teach and positive behaviour management can equip staff with the skills needed to handle challenging situations effectively.

The Axcis Academy also offers a plethora of courses and webinars to help you in your roles as educators.

Mental Health Resources: A lot of schools usually offer, great, supportive cultures. Remember to get in touch with your consultant if you are unsure about something or need some advice reading whatever you are experiencing in your ad-hoc role as an Axcis candidate that could potentially be affecting your mental health or well-being. If you are a permanent member of staff at a school seek support from your team leaders. There are also charities like Education Support which specialise in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of teachers and education staff in schools, colleges and universities. Call their freephone number to see if they can assist you in any way - 08000 562 561

Work-Life Balance: Work-life balance is important for any job. You can only help others when you are in a good state of mental health and wellbeing so take some time to take care of yourself. Set realistic expectations for yourself, and participate in practices that help you from burning out, whether that's nature, running, mindfulness, motivational content, reading etc. By empowering your mental health and well-being you're able to empower and inspire others, creating happier students and communities overall.

Mental health support is a vital component of SEND education. By prioritising the mental well-being of both students and educators, we can create a more supportive and effective learning environment. Schools must take proactive steps to integrate mental health strategies into their daily practices, ensuring that everyone in the SEND community can thrive. For students exhibiting challenging behaviour, employing strategies like Team Teach and positive behaviour management can make a significant difference, fostering a safe and supportive atmosphere for all.

Let's work together to make the differences that impact and empower.

Don't forget to update your availability using the Axcis App or get in touch with your consultant if you're looking for another booking. Most of all, don't forget to check out the Axcis Academy and enrol for your next CPD to boost your career prospects.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

Mental health is your emotional, psychological and mental well-being. It affects how you think, feel and behave.

That's why we’re once again proud to support the Mental Health Foundation this Mental Health Awareness Week – 13 to 19 May. Join in and help to create a world with good mental health for all.

This year’s theme is movement: moving more for our mental health. Get involved by finding and sharing your moments for movement this Mental Health Awareness Week.

#MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MomentsForMovement

For many people, it can be hard to talk about their mental health problems. This can make them feel isolated and alone.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent,

but the one most responsive to change.” - Charles Darwin

Mental health is a subject that is often discussed in the media but rarely within the education sector. This is not surprising as there are many barriers to effective mental health support in schools. These include:

The stigma around mental health issues;

The fact that teachers and teaching assistants often feel responsible for their own and others' wellbeing;

Lack of time for reflection and development;

Lack of funding for training and support;

The lack of knowledge about mental health issues within the sector;

A reluctance to seek help due to fear of stigmatisation or discrimination;

As teachers and teaching assistants, we are constantly adapting to change. Working in education can be very stressful. The classroom environment is ever-changing and we must learn to cope with this. You have to deal with a wide range of issues from discipline to behaviour management and from different learning styles to helping students with special educational needs. Sometimes it can be difficult for us to deal with these changes and so it is important that you're able to manage your mental health in order to help the children in your classroom.

Here are some tips on how you can do this:

Take breaks when needed

Eat healthy snacks and meals and drink plenty of water

Get enough sleep (at least 7 hours)

Exercise regularly

Take time out from your busy schedule and have a break from it all every now and again. This may mean going somewhere where you can relax away from your normal routine. You might like to go for a walk in nature or visit a local café or park. It could also mean doing something completely different like going on holiday or spending time with family and friends.

Exercise can also help improve your mental health by boosting serotonin levels in your brain which helps improve sleep patterns and feelings of depression and anxiety. Taking part in physical activity such as walking, swimming or cycling helps reduce stress levels which may cause symptoms such as headaches, back pain or muscle tension.

If you find yourself feeling down or anxious about work or life in general, talk to someone about it. It can make all the difference to how you feel and it can help you feel better, faster.

Mental Health Awareness Week runs from 13th to 19th May 2024. Click here to find out how you can get involved or find support for your own mental health.

Mental Health CPD Training

If you want to find out more about supporting students’ mental health then Axics offer a free CPD accredited course for all our registered candidates: Student Mental Well-Being - Training for Teachers & Staff 2023/24. The aim of this course is to support schools and staff in their understanding of policies and procedures around the mental well-being of children and young people. The course provides you with information regarding good practice on how schools should address the situation of pupils with mental health issues. To enrol please just email our Candidate Training team.

Are you looking for SEND staff or work?

As a SEND recruitment agency, we believe in the power of diversity and inclusion in our schools. That's why we're proud to sponsor organizations like The National Association of Special Educational Needs (nasen) and smaller charities like Become, and support a range of SEND events and CPD opportunities.

At Axcis, we're passionate about empowering the lives of vulnerable children and young people. We believe that every child deserves access to high-quality education and support, regardless of their needs or abilities.
What is a Cover Supervisor?

What is a Cover Supervisor?

Cover Supervisors are suitably trained or experienced school staff who supervise pupils carrying out pre-prepared exercises when teaching staff are on short-term absence. The Cover Supervisor’s main job is to manage a classroom, ensuring that students remain on task with the work they have been set.

What's involved?

Cover Supervisor roles vary significantly depending on whether the role is undertaken in a primary, secondary or special school. The role however should not require any active teaching, marking or planning.

Main duties may include:

Supervising work that has been set in accordance with the school policy.

Managing the behaviour of pupils while they are undertaking this work to ensure a constructive learning environment.

Responding to any questions from pupils about processes and procedures.

Dealing with any immediate problems or emergencies according to the school’s policies and procedures.

Collecting any completed work after the lesson and returning it to the appropriate teacher.

Reporting back as appropriate using the school’s agreed referral procedures on the behaviour of pupils during the class, and any issues arising.

Coordinating and supporting teaching assistants / support staff in the classroom.

What skills, experience and qualifications do you need?

There are no specific qualifications required to become a Cover Supervisor - it is up to schools and local authorities to decide what qualifications and experience you will need to have. Some may employ Cover Supervisors based solely on their experience, others may require some form of minimum qualification.

As a minimum however, most schools require the following:

Previous, significant experience of working in an education environment

Excellent communication skills

Good behaviour management skills

A high degree of flexibility

Possible qualifications that schools may also look for include:

GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths at grade C or above

A recognised, relevant level 3 or level 4 qualification for supporting teaching and learning in schools

A degree

What training is available?

Axcis offers a Cover Supervisor course which is designed to ensure you have all the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in a Cover Supervisor role. More information can be found on our CPD Training and Career Development Page.

What’s next?

If you are interested in becoming a Cover Supervisor, speak to your consultant or local Axcis office to discuss your options further. Or if you are already a Cover Supervisor, check out our jobs pages to start applying for your next perfect role.

National Epilepsy Week 2023

From 24th May to 30th May, National Epilepsy Week will be taking place to raise awareness for those affected by epilepsy, what epilepsy is, who’s affected and what can be done to help those who suffer from this condition.

What is epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the brain and causes recurring seizures or fits in people. Due to an uncontrolled increase of excess electrical activity in the brain interfering with the normal functions, this causes a short interruption to the relay of messages in the brain.

Who’s affected?

Approximately 500,000 people in the England are diagnosed with epilepsy, affecting people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly.

What can be done to help?

Learning to recognise the symptoms of a seizure is a great place to start helping those affected, as well as knowing what to do when a seizure occurs to minimise the harm done to both the person and those around them. You can also look into lobbying for more support for those affected by epilepsy, so they can get the treatment and care they deserve.

All in all, epilepsy is a condition affecting more people than you might think, and by knowing the early warning signs and what to do when a seizure occurs can make a big difference helping those affected by the chronic condition.

This years’ theme

This year the theme for the week is #epilepsymatters. Visit the Epilepsy Society website to find out more on National Epilepsy Week and much more.

Epilepsy Training

Did you know Axcis have their very own in-house Epilepsy Awareness and Buccal Administration trainers? Our three trainers travel the length and breadth of country providing vital Epilepsy training to our candidates who work with students’ affected by this condition to ensure the students are provided with the best possible care should it be required.
Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental health is your emotional, psychological and mental well-being. It affects how you think, feel and behave.

The stigma around mental health issues;

The fact that teachers and teaching assistants often feel responsible for their own and others' wellbeing;

Lack of time for reflection and development;

Lack of funding for training and support;

The lack of knowledge about mental health issues within the sector;

A reluctance to seek help due to fear of stigmatisation or discrimination;

Mental Health Awareness Week runs from 15th to 21st May 2023. Click here to find out how you can get involved or find support for your own mental health. Further information can also be found on the NHS website.

Mental Health CPD Training

If you want to find out more about supporting students’ mental health then Axics offer a free CPD accredited course for all our registered candidates: Student Mental Well-Being - Training for Teachers & Staff 2022/23.

If you're looking for a SEND teaching or support job in England or Wales, why not register with Axcis, the SEND recruitment specialists?
CPD Training - Supporting Autistic Learners in the Secondary Classroom

Working with secondary aged students on the autism spectrum can be incredibly rewarding for both educators and students. Not only does it provide an opportunity to improve communication, social skills and academic performance, but it also helps create an inclusive environment where everyone feels accepted and respected.

For teachers and support staff, further autism training is essential in order to effectively support these learners. With additional education comes a greater understanding of how best to meet the needs of students on the autstic spectrum. This might include techniques such as visual supports, verbal prompts or positive reinforcement strategies that help promote engagement and success in the classroom. In addition to this, extra training can equip staff with the tools they need to better recognise signs of stress or anxiety in their pupils – allowing them to intervene quickly and appropriately. It can also provide a deeper insight into the unique challenges faced by those on the autism spectrum, enabling everyone to create an environment that is more conducive to learning.

This is why we’re delighted to be able to offer a completely free “Supporting Autistic Learners in the Secondary Classroom” course, in conjunction with our training partners, Reachout ASC.
Transition to Secondary School

Refer a friend to Axcis and earn £50 in shopping vouchers

Refer your friends to Axcis, and not only will you be helping them to find work, but you will also earn £50 in shopping vouchers* – everyone’s a winner!

How does it work?

If you have friends who are looking for employment, why not refer them to Axcis? If we place them in a school or alternative provision for at least 5 days, you will receive £50 in shopping vouchers as a thank-you. (Please note that any referrals made who do not complete 5 days work will not be counted).

As an added bonus, the person you refer will also receive a £20 voucher when you get your shopping vouchers – double win!

How do I refer a friend to Axcis?

If you can provide more information, like what sort of work they might be interested in, that will help us, but isn’t essential.

How will I know when my friend has worked 5 days?

All you need to do is ask your friend to let you know once they have completed their first 5 days with Axcis. If you then contact your consultant/local office you’ll be able to check if the 5 days have been completed. If they have, we will email you with your shopping vouchers.

*Terms and conditions apply as follows:

Referral bonus is not payable if the referred candidate has already registered with Axcis Education Recruitment prior to the referral being made.
The referred candidate must have been paid for 5 full days of work through Axcis in order for the referee to qualify for the payment.
We must have written evidence of the referral specifically mentioning names – either through our online referral form, by email/text message from the referee or the referred candidate, or by the candidate completing the applicable field online when they register with us.
Offer not open to permanent employees of Axcis Education Recruitment.

Top Safeguarding Tips for Supply Staff

Safeguarding is always a hot topic for education professionals. But how can you make sure that you are meeting your responsibilities with regard to safeguarding while working at schools on a supply basis?

1 – Pay close attention during your registration interview

Your consultant will run through the company safeguarding policy and also give practical advice for when you are in school. All Axcis staff are then safer recruitment tested at interview and offered further training where needed.

2 – Undertake further training

At Axcis, we take our training responsibilities seriously and are pleased to offer Safeguarding in Education Level 2 as part of our free training courses on offer. If you’d like to enrol on this course, please just speak to your Axcis consultant or alternatively you can email our Candidate Training team.

3 – Read the government guidance on safeguarding

The DfE issue guidance on Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE). If you’ve already completed your registration with Axcis then you will already have received and read this. But all school staff should be familiar with this document so if you’ve not read it before, you should take a look.

4 – Be aware of the school child protection policy and staff behaviour policy

When you are new to a school, they should provide you with a copy of (or access to) the child protection policy and the staff behaviour policy. You should take the time to review these documents at your earliest convenience, as they may vary from school to school. However, we would always advise new members of staff to behave with caution and defer to experienced staff members if there are difficult situations, especially when you are new to a school.

5 – Be aware of who the designated safeguarding lead is

If you are not informed as to who the designated safeguarding lead in a school is, you should always ask. This is the person who you should approach if you have any cause for concern or questions regarding safeguarding or child protection while in school, so it’s important you know who they are.

6 – Reflect

Part of the “Safeguarding Trilogy” is to “reflect”. This is because simply the act of receiving a disclosure or being involved in an incident can be traumatic for all parties. The ‘reflect’ section includes both personal and professional issues: thinking about how you might deal with the situation in future or improve your practice to avoid incidents, and also making sure that you’re OK by talking to friends and family, and even your Axcis consultant if you’re feeling vulnerable.

7 – Be aware of early warning signs

All staff, whether on supply or not need to be aware that they are on the front line where safeguarding is concerned, and they are responsible for reporting signs of abuse or neglect to the designated safeguarding lead – there are some excellent support documents and advice provided by the NSPCC.

8 – Remember to inform your Axcis consultant

As an Axcis candidate, it is advised that you keep your consultant in the loop if you experience any safeguarding concerns while on supply at one of the schools we work with. At Axcis, we want to ensure that you receive the appropriate level of support and training to ensure that your experience of working for us is a positive one.
Top tips to becoming a great SEND Teaching Assistant

Teaching Assistants are an essential part of any SEND school. They play a vital role in supporting the class teacher in delivering lessons, and they help to ensure that each child's needs are met. Teaching Assistants provide opportunities for pupils to progress, whilst making sure that their individual goals and aspirations are met.

Know your role

The first step to becoming a great SEND Teaching Assistant is knowing your role. Knowing what you can do and what is beyond your role will help you to better serve your students.

It's important to know the limits of your role, as well as school policies and procedures surrounding those limits. It's also helpful if you have direct contact with parents or guardians so they can understand how best they can support their children at home.

Keep up to date with available training opportunities

Keeping up to date with training opportunities is crucial if you want to be a great SEND Teaching Assistant. Axcis offer a whole host of training opportunities for free. For a list of upcoming training, check out our events page on our website.

Communication is key

Communication is key

Speak to your class teacher

Talk to the parents

Let pupils know what you are doing

Develop a relationship of trust and respect with the class teacher, pupils and parents

Develop a relationship of trust and respect with the class teacher. It's important to get this right from the outset, as it can be a key factor in building your reputation within the school and with parents. Be respectful towards pupils and parents. In order for both parties to feel comfortable around you, it is vital that you are open about your role, expectations and behaviour in relation to them. Be honest, transparent and trustworthy: If something goes wrong or if there are problems then don't hide anything from anyone; talk openly about what has happened so that everyone involved understands how they can help rectify any issues.

Always be positive

Be a role model and smile genuinely all the time — even when you're feeling tired or fed up — and show that it can be done by being happy yourself!

Conclusion

Taking on the role of a Teaching Assistant (TA) in a Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) setting can, at times, be challenging. But as a TA in a SEND school you will make a huge difference to the children whose lives you touch.

You will have to be flexible and adaptable; learning new skills, ways of working and interacting with others is essential for your success as an effective TA. It’s important that you keep in mind that each child has their own individual needs which need to be addressed through your intervention plan. Don't expect all pupils with SEND to respond in the same way or at the same pace - what works for one may not work for another!

Are you ready to take on the challenge?

If you're looking for a SEND teaching assistant or support job in England or Wales, why not register with Axcis, the SEND recruitment specialists? Or perhaps you need to recruit staff for your school or provision? If so, why not take a look at the Axcis Website, or get in touch today to find out how we can help?

Musical instruments to make with your class

With World Music Day around the corner, what better project to do with your children than create some instruments with them? Even better if you can bring a discussion about reusing or recycling into it, too! Here are our top ideas.

1. Easter Egg Maracas

The intention with this project is not to go out and buy a load of plastic eggs – the idea is to use what you have, so if (like me) you can’t stand to throw away the little pods that come in Kinder Eggs and you happen to have a drawer full of them at home, why not bring them in and let your class create some fun shakers or maracas with them? If the school canteen uses plastic spoons, collect and wash some and use these to create handles. With the addition of a few beans or a small handful of rice, you have the start of your DIY orchestra!

2. Tin Can/Crisp Tube Drums

Back to that “junk modelling” box to see what else I couldn’t stand to see go to landfill… and what do I find but some old crisp tubes and tin cans. Simply re-use the plastic lid, or stretch a balloon over the top and you have some instant drums.

3. Lolly Stick Harmonica

When browsing for ideas online, I came across this lovely idea to make simple harmonicas using some wax paper and lolly sticks. Most craft cupboards have these basic items, so why not give them a try?

4. Straw Pipes

By simply cutting straws to different lengths and taping them together, you can create this simple version of pan pipes. As this instrument is a bit less noisy than many, parents are sure to appreciate this one!

5. Gong!

If you have a couple of old foil catering trays, you can create this fun instrument by simply taping them together and using a cardboard tube to strike them – GONG! Kids love this one!

6. Castanets

Another chance to look through that junk modelling box for inspiration. If you have some bottle caps or something else that will suffice, you can have a go at making these simple castanets.

7. Mini Banjo

With some elastic bands, a lolly stick and a lid from an old jar, you can make these fun little mini banjos. Adjust the tension of the bands to create different notes and away you play!

8. Ankle/Wrist Bells

Take (or make) a bracelet and attach some bells to create some music while you move. Alternatively, attach them to paper plates for a home-made tambourine.

Do you like to craft with kids?

If you like the idea of crafting with kids, why not consider a classroom based role as a teaching assistant? At Axcis, we are always on the lookout for people with a passion for inspiring the next generation, so why not register on our website and see what jobs we can find for you?

5 Gift Ideas for Father's Day

Run out of ideas for Father's Day gifts? These 5 simple, home made gift ideas are sure to make an impression on dad. Perfect for making in the classroom with students or at home.

1. Calendar Blocks

For a simple but effective gift idea, consider making calendar blocks. If you don’t have scrap wood off-cuts, why not raid the kids toy box? Most of us have a set of wooden blocks in there somewhere! To make this awesome gift, you will need:

2 Cubes of wood

One long/oblong block of wood (that the two cubes will fit on top of)

Velcro strips, magnetic tape or flat Lego blocks

Decorating materials – paper/card/paint etc.

To make this lovely gift, start by decorating your blocks (or leave them rustic for a more natural feel). Then add numbers/fixings to each block as follows:

Block 1 (cube) – put numbers on each face of the cube – 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Block 2 (cube) – put these numbers of each face of the cube – 0, 1, 2, 6, 7, 8

Block 3 (oblong) – fix your Velcro/flat Lego block to one face – your months will attach to this.

Using good quality card, or laminated paper, create 12 strips of the appropriate size and put each month of the year on them. On the reverse of these strips, put the “matching” Velcro/Lego so that they will fix to your oblong block. Voila! You have a set of calendar blocks which can be used year after year. You can add another set of blocks for days of the week if you wish, or you can leave this part off – it’s up to you!

2. Make a Mug

You can pick up a plain white mug from most supermarkets for about a pound, and you can get ceramic pens/paints from most good craft stores, or online. Along with a bit of inspiration, that’s all you’ll need to create a lovely personalised mug for your dad this Father’s Day. You’ll need to bake your mug at 170C for about 40 mins to fix the design and prevent it from washing off. Who doesn’t love a new mug? Ideal for use at home or work, your Dad is sure to appreciate this lovely personal gift.

3. Lolly Pop Plant Pot

If you have a nice decorative plant pot, this is an ideal starting point. Alternatively you could use a plain white ceramic pot and decorate it in much the same way you can decorate a mug, then use it for this project.

Into the pot, place some florists oasis foam, or cut up some old polystyrene packaging to fit inside. Add to this a range of colourful lolly pops, and perhaps a cute home-made sign and voila! You have a lovely personal gift for dad!

4. Tin Can Desk Tidy

Cheap tins of tomatoes (without the pull tops) work well for this, because the old-school way of opening tins tends to leave you with a nice smooth top (no cut fingers from jagged tins, please!) and the acid from the tomatoes leaves the inside of the tin stain-free and easy to rinse out and use. Although any tin works, this is what I’ve personally found to be best for this type of project. Simple spray the can with undercoat to give a nice finish to work on, then decorate away for a personalised pen pot. You could even order some personalised pens/pencils to go inside as an added touch.

5. Dad Rocks! Paperweight

Next time you’re in the garden, keep an eye out for a nice big, round stone to use for this project. Again, spraying with undercoat first will give you a smoother surface to start working with. From there, you can decorate your paperweight using paint, sequins – anything really! Ideal for use as a paperweight but this could also be used to make a BBQ napkin weight or door stop – ideal for breezy summer days!

Any More Ideas?

Do you have any simple Father’s Day craft ideas to add to our list? Or perhaps you’ve made one of these and would like to share your efforts – either way, we’d love to hear from you!

Are you seeking SEND staff or Work?

If you’re looking for a SEND teaching or support job in England or Wales, why not register with Axcis, the SEND recruitment specialists? Or perhaps you need to recruit staff for your school or provision? If so, why not take a look at the Axcis Website, or get in touch today to find out how we can help?

What can registered candidates do in the Axcis App?

The features available to you may depend on your registration status, compliance progress and whether you are currently completing placements through Axcis.

Review and update your details

Registered candidates can use the app to review and update important contact information attached to their Axcis candidate profile.

Keeping your details current helps your consultant contact you and understand which opportunities may be suitable.

Remember to update Axcis if you change your:

telephone number

email address

home address

availability

preferred roles or education settings

realistic travel distance

If an important change cannot be made through the app, contact your consultant directly.

Upload requested documents

You can upload certain documents requested by Axcis through the app. Depending on the document required, you may be able to photograph it using your device or upload an existing file.

Make sure every document is complete, clear and readable before submitting it. Uploading a document does not automatically mean that it has been accepted or that your compliance checks are complete. The Axcis compliance team may still need to review it or request further information.

Important: Never upload confidential information belonging to a pupil, school or education setting. The document-upload feature should only be used for information requested as part of your Axcis candidate record or compliance process.

Update your availability

Keeping your availability current helps your consultant understand when you are free to work.

Update your availability whenever:

your available working days change

you become available for additional work

you accept work outside Axcis

you have an appointment, holiday or other commitment

a long-term placement ends

your circumstances change

Your availability is only one part of finding a suitable placement. It is also important to tell your consultant about changes to your preferred roles, age groups, education settings or realistic travel distance.

If you become available at short notice or need to discuss a confirmed booking, contact your consultant directly rather than relying only on an app update.

View upcoming bookings

The app allows registered candidates to view upcoming booking information. Checking these details in advance can help you prepare for your placement and confirm where you need to go.

Before travelling, check the information you have been given, including:

the name and address of the school or education setting

the date of the booking

your expected arrival time

the role or support you have been booked to provide

any instructions supplied by your consultant

If any information is missing or does not match what you discussed, contact your consultant before the placement begins.

Manage your timesheets

Registered candidates can use the app to manage and submit timesheet information for completed work.

Enter your days or hours accurately and submit them according to the timesheet process and deadlines provided by Axcis. The school or setting may need to approve your submission before payment can be processed.

Check your entry carefully before submitting it, particularly if you:

worked a half day

completed additional agreed hours

worked across more than one booking

did not work all the hours originally scheduled

If you are unsure how to complete a timesheet or believe that information is missing, contact your consultant or the appropriate Axcis team before the submission deadline.

Search and apply for education jobs

Registered candidates can search the Axcis vacancy database and express an interest in suitable opportunities through the app.

When considering a role, look carefully at:

the location

the age group or education phase

whether the role is SEND, mainstream or a combination of both

the experience or training requested

the expected working pattern

whether the opportunity is short-term, long-term or permanent

If a role interests you but you are unsure whether your experience is suitable, speak to your Axcis consultant. They can help you understand the setting and decide whether the opportunity may be appropriate.

Receive vacancy and booking notifications

The app can send notifications about new vacancies, shifts and other relevant updates.

Allowing notifications can help you see opportunities promptly, but a notification does not automatically mean that a booking has been confirmed. Always check the details and wait for confirmation from Axcis before travelling to a school or setting.

Communicate with Axcis

The app provides another way to receive messages and communicate with Axcis. You can also locate Axcis contact information when you need it.

App messages are useful for routine communication, but urgent matters should be handled by speaking directly to your consultant or local Axcis team.

Where can you download the Axcis App?

The Axcis App is free to download for compatible Apple and Android devices.

Use the official links below or search for Axcis Education in your device’s app store.

Download the Axcis App

Download for Apple Download for Android

Only download the app from the official Apple App Store or Google Play listing. Check that the app is called Axcis Education before installing it.

How do registered candidates get started?

Download the Axcis Education App from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Open the app and select the login option.

Log in using the details associated with your registered Axcis candidate account.

Review your contact information and tell your consultant if anything needs to be changed.

Enable notifications if you would like to receive relevant app alerts.

Check your availability and update it if necessary.

Explore your bookings, documents, vacancies and messages.

If you have forgotten your password, use the password-reset option provided. Check your junk or spam folder if the reset email does not appear in your inbox.

If you still cannot log in, contact your consultant or email info@axcis.co.uk.

If you have not yet registered with Axcis, complete our candidate enquiry form. The Axcis team will then contact you about your experience, preferred work and the next steps in the registration process.

When should you contact your consultant directly?

The app makes routine administration easier, but it does not replace direct communication with your consultant.

Contact your consultant or local Axcis team directly if:

you are unwell or unable to attend a confirmed booking

you are delayed on the way to a school or education setting

your booking details appear to be incorrect

the role differs significantly from what was agreed

you need immediate support during a placement

you have an urgent question about a timesheet or payment deadline

your availability has changed at short notice

Do not rely on an app message, email or availability update to report that you cannot attend a confirmed booking. Call your consultant as soon as possible so that Axcis can inform the setting and provide support.

Safeguarding concerns must be reported immediately through the school or setting’s safeguarding procedures. You should also contact Axcis where appropriate, but the app should not be used as the only method of reporting an urgent safeguarding concern.

Why should you keep the app updated?

Installing available updates can give you access to the latest version of the app and may resolve technical problems.

It is also helpful to:

use a secure password that you do not share with anyone else

keep your device’s operating system updated

review your notification permissions

log out if you access your account on a shared device

contact Axcis if information on your profile appears to be incorrect

Because the app contains personal and work-related information, protect your login details and keep your device secure.

Frequently asked questions about the Axcis App

Is the Axcis App free?

Yes. The Axcis Education App is free to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Can I register with Axcis through the app?

No. The app is for candidates who are already registered with Axcis. If you would like to work with Axcis, complete our candidate enquiry form. A member of the Axcis team will contact you about the next steps.

Can I update my availability in the app?

Yes. Registered candidates can update their availability through the Axcis App. Keep your calendar accurate and contact your consultant directly if your availability changes at short notice.

Can I submit my timesheet through the app?

Registered candidates can use the app to manage timesheet information. Submit your days or hours accurately and follow the timesheet instructions and deadlines provided by Axcis.

Will the app show my confirmed bookings?

The app allows registered candidates to view upcoming bookings. If booking information is missing or appears incorrect, check with your consultant before travelling.

Does expressing an interest in a job guarantee an interview or placement?

No. Expressing an interest through the app lets Axcis know that you would like to be considered. Your experience, compliance status, availability and suitability for the school or setting will still need to be considered.

What should I do if the app is not working?

First, check that you are using the latest version of the app and that your device has an internet connection. You can also close and reopen the app or restart your device.

If the problem continues, contact your Axcis consultant or email info@axcis.co.uk. Include a brief explanation of the problem, but never send your password by email.

What if I have registered but do not have app login details?

Contact your Axcis consultant and ask for help accessing your candidate account. Do not create a second registration through the website or candidate form unless an Axcis team member asks you to do so.

Keep your Axcis information current

The Axcis App gives registered candidates a simple way to manage routine information, check upcoming work and stay connected with Axcis.

Keeping your availability, contact information and requested documents current helps your consultant understand your circumstances and identify opportunities that are more likely to suit you.

Your first day of work with Axcis – a useful checklist for success

So, you’ve secured your first day of work with Axcis. Here is a checklist to ensure that it goes as smoothly as possible. Follow this guide and you can’t go wrong!

Be prepared – things to do before you go in

It’s important to be prepared for your first day of work, as you may not get a second chance to make a good first impression. In order to be as prepared as possible, you should:

Plan your journey – if relying on technology to get you to school, ensure you have a printed map and/or directions as well – just in case!

Read up about the school – unless it’s a very short notice booking, you should have time to check the school website/Ofsted reports and become familiar with the environment and students before you arrive for your first day.

Prepare some materials – hopefully the school will be organised and will already have learning materials ready for you to use. But don’t rely on this – if you have some wide-ranging activities or worksheets you can prepare in advance, do so – even if you don’t use them, being prepared will make you look good to the school.

Timesheet check – it’s worth calling your consultant at Axcis and asking them if you’ll need to do a paper timesheet or if the school you are working in does them online. If they are online, you shouldn’t need to do anything. However, if the school prefer good old paper timesheets, you’ll need to ensure you have one printed and ready to take in with you.

Dress appropriately – make sure you have an outfit ready which is suitable for the school you will be working in. If in doubt, check the dress code with your consultant.

Ensure you are signed up with a payroll company – the last thing we want is a delay in your payment

Ensure you have your DBS certificate and photo ID ready to take with you – schools will most likely want to see this on your first day of work

Once you are at school – things to remember on the day

Once you arrive for your first day, here are a few things you should remember to do:

Be on time (or early) – no manager will be impressed if you are late on your first day of work, no matter how great your excuse is.

Smile and be polite to all staff you meet – as my mum always said – manners are free!

Read up on the needs of the students – you won’t always be able to do this first thing in the morning as you may be needed in class. However, if you get chance, seek out the SENCo and see if you can read the EHC plans for the students you are working with. This will help you to meet their needs as well as demonstrating to the school that you are a conscientious employee.

Mark/assess – if you are teaching, you’ll be expected to assess any work you have done with the students that day. Even if you are only booked for a single day of work. If you’re not familiar with the marking policy of the school, simple corrections and a short comment is appropriate.

Tidy up – at the end of the day, ensure that the classroom you have been working in is clean and tidy.

Feedback – if you enjoyed the school and are keen to continue working there, seek out the line manager and tell them you had a great day and see if they need you back (if you’re not already booked). It’s fine to accept a booking and then let your consultant know. However, if you do NOT wish to return to the school, call your Axcis consultant for a discussion about this rather than telling the school directly before you leave for the day.

Timesheet – the final thing you should do before leaving school is your timesheet. If the school do paper timesheets, you’ll need to seek out the member of staff responsible for signing them and ensure it’s completed – AND YOU RETAIN A COPY – this can be as simple as a photo on your phone of the signed timesheet. If the school do them online you won’t need to do anything other than check your email to see that your copy has come through (and let Axcis know if it doesn’t!)

We hope you find this checklist useful and have a smooth first day working for us! And don't forget that we offer up to £250 in shopping vouchers if you refer any friends or family to us - find out more about the scheme here.

Supply staff: Get work quickly when the new term starts

How can you make sure you are at the top of the pile when it comes to making sure you get work quickly at the start of a new term? Here are our top tips.

Make sure you have everything up to date

Keep us up to date with your latest details – it will help us to find you work more quickly.
To make sure there are no delays getting work at the start of a new term, the things you should check are up to date are:

CV – Make sure you have sent an up to date CV to your consultant. If you need help to improve/enhance your CV, you could check out our article on writing a good CV.

Referees – One of the key things which prevents us from offering assignments to our contractors is out of date paperwork, and in particular – references! So, make sure that you have these completely up to date by putting a call into your consultant and checking whether any more recent ones are needed.

DBS – Make sure that your DBS check is still valid and up to date – without one, you simply can’t work in a school

Availability – Does your consultant know which days of the week you are available? Axcis contractors can update their availability by using our simple online diary– make sure yours has been filled in for the new term!

Be proactive

Many agency workers fall into the trap of assuming that they don’t need to do anything except sit and wait for the phone to ring with an offer of work. Although this is not strictly untrue, you might find that you secure work more quickly if you are proactive. Things you can do include:

Apply for jobs – at Axcis, all of our jobs are advertised on our website. By applying, your consultant will receive a notification, and you will proceed directly to the shortlisted candidates who are being considered for the role. So get onto our jobs page today and start to apply for positions which appeal to you.

Follow up with a call – once you’ve applied online for jobs, if there are any for which you feel you are particularly suitable, follow it up with a phone call. There could have been lots of applications for the position, and you’ll want to make sure you stand out. So give the consultant mentioned on the job advert a ring and talk to them about the role and why you feel you are suitable. They may give you advice to tweak your CV or do other things which will help you to secure it, so it’s well worth the time spent picking up the phone.

Encourage your consultant to market your details – agencies will sometimes contact suitable schools on your behalf to let them know you are available for work. If you’d be keen for this to happen, it may be worth talking to your consultant and making sure they know how far you’d travel and what sort of schools you are keen on so that they can approach them on your behalf to seek out upcoming vacancies.

Why isn’t there much day to day cover at the start of term?

The first few weeks of term can be an unpredictable time in the supply industry – typically, there will not be any pre-arranged absence or training happening in schools at the start of term, so the majority of vacancies will be for last-minute full-time, long-term assignments. Then, later in the term schools experience an increase in sick leave, paternity/maternity cover and cover for staff on training. As a result, short-term

Refer a friend and earn £££

Holidays and the start of term can be a difficult time for many supply workers. It's therefore a great time to think about referring friends to Axcis - if we find them work you can earn up to £250 in shopping vouchers. Find out more here.
